A $100 Million Dollar Redevelopment and Upzoning of our downtown?

We Don’t Want it

Islanders have moved here or remained here because of the unique character and sense of place they have found. Many of us have fled urban canyons and suburban strip malls. Under the proposed upzoning and redevelopment, a handful of developers will profit from the sense of place and enviable lifestyle that we have today, and in the process put those very things at risk.

Our community wants and needs to fund a wide range of Community Priorities ranging from Open Space to Road Improvements to Affordable Housing to a Community Center. Few Islanders are willing to trade the funding of those Community Priorities for the massive redevelopment proposed for Winslow.

We Don’t need it

We can already accommodate predicted growth, which may or may not occur, under our current zoning.

We can replace deteriorated utilities, add parking options and refine our zoning ordinances– all without adopting increased heights and density, building a parking garage or zoning for larger commercial development.

We Can’t Afford it

…Financially

The City has acknowledged a price tag of at least $100 million to pay for Winslow Tomorrow inspired projects. Some experts have suggested that we may be looking at much, much more. Taxpayers can only afford so much to fund all of our community needs.

…Environmentally

We rely solely on our aquifers for potable water. There have been instances of declining well levels and salt-water intrusion. No one knows how much water we have. The GMA, our Comp Plan and common sense dictate that growth must not occur without adequate water resources.
